Transforming Oceanside School District with Energy Efficiency: A partnership for a sustainable future
Nestled by the Atlantic Ocean, Oceanside School District is a robust and diverse public school serving over 5,000 students on Long Island, NY. Like most school systems, Oceanside battled constant HVAC repairs and deferred maintenance. Tiring of quick-fix solutions, the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Phyllis Harrington, alongside her Assistant Superintendent of Business, Dr. Jerel Cokley, and administrative team, were determined to find a long-term solution that would not only provide efficient, sustainable infrastructure for their district but also achieve a return on investment as well.
Energy Upgrades for Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability
Working side by side, the district and Energy Systems Group created a plan to provide long-term solutions and guaranteed outcomes.
- Reduced Energy Consumption and Improved Lighting Quality: Upgraded interior and exterior lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, which enhanced lighting quality and reduced energy usage.
- Lower Maintenance Costs and Improved Comfort: Replaced outdated HVAC systems, installed high-efficiency VRF systems, upgraded heating distribution, lowered maintenance costs, and improved classroom comfort for students and staff.
- Reduced Carbon Footprint and Energy Expenses: Installed solar panels on eight buildings, now generating a substantial 2.6 megawatts of renewable energy, thereby reducing carbon footprint and energy expenses.
- Enhanced Operational Efficiency: Implemented district-wide supervisory controls and building envelope weatherization through Building Management Systems (BMS) to optimize energy use and operational efficiency.
Initiative Delivers Financial Savings and Environmental Benefits
The project has already started to yield impressive results, with projected savings of over $850,000 annually on utilities such as electricity, oil, and gas. These savings are expected to cover the initial investment and provide long-term financial benefits. Now with reduced energy expenses, the district can reallocate resources without additional burdens on taxpayers.
In addition, the district is reducing its carbon footprint through this project. Using solar energy significantly decreases greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the district’s commitment to sustainability. The infrastructure improvements also ensure a more comfortable and conducive learning environment for students and staff.
Innovative STEAM Program and Community-Driven Solutions
Energy Systems Group developed a customized STEAM education program for Oceanside students with hands-on learning experiences related to energy efficiency, sustainability, and environmental conservation. This initiative enhances connections to the curriculum and instills a sense of environmental stewardship among students.
Community engagement has been a cornerstone of the project. The district prioritized transparency through detailed FAQs and informational sessions, ensuring residents are well-informed and supportive. This collaborative approach has fostered a sense of shared purpose toward achieving the district’s sustainability goals.
Implementing these comprehensive energy solutions allowed the district to address immediate infrastructure needs and paved the way for long-term financial and environmental advantages. With reduced energy expenses, improved learning environments, and a commitment to sustainability, Oceanside School District creates a shining example of the positive impact of forward-thinking energy initiatives, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
