American Public Works Association’s Public Works Project of the Year in Environment

The biogas gas containment dome is up at the Montpelier wastewater treatment plant! The dome holds 20,000 cubic feet of renewable biogas created by co-digesting the plant’s sludge with high strength waste received from local industries. This gas will be used to generate renewable power on-site, helping to make the facility net zero.

The lids are currently going on both one million-gallon digesters at the Altoona Water Authority’s Westerly Facility. By the end of the year, both will be filled with and generating the biogas required to heat the digesters and buildings and fuel the thermal biosolids dryer that will be creating Class A material at the site.
