Turning Waste Steam into Power, PVS Chemicals

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

PVS Chemicals, a family-owned manufacturing company, is setting new standards in sustainable industrial operations at its 130-year-old sulfuric acid plant in Chicago. The facility generates large volumes of high-pressure waste steam during chemical production. PVS wanted an innovative solution to capture and reuse steam efficiently, reduce waste, lower operational costs, and meet growing demands for environmental responsibility. This project exemplifies PVS’s commitment to sustainable operations and to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of Responsible Consumption and Production.

Innovative Solutions

Our partnership expedited implementation through direct procurement and project management capabilities.

Facility Upgrades:

 Construction of a new metal building to house new equipment

Design and install a 2.6 MW condensing extraction steam turbine

Installation of a new steam deaerator with reverse osmosis water
treatment, steam condenser, and control system

 Integration of the new system into the plant’s SCADA network

On an average day the plant will offset 95% of its electrical
consumption which offsets 12,700 tons of CO2 emission per year;
equivalent to planting 529,292 mature trees or powering 1,452 homes for one year or driving 2,484 cars for one year
